I work with the children up to 8 years old and play is so important for this age group. The course has given me the skills I need to support children more effectively through play - especially with the emotional and psychological areas. It's an interesting course, with loads of practical ideas, and the tutor support is excellent.

Course Outline

Module One: The Importance of Play Therapy. Explore definitions of play; understand the role of play in learning and development; explore the role of play in early education; explore the value of play therapy; introductory techniques and approaches; sand tray therapy; comic strip conversations.

Module Two: Preparing for Play Therapy. Explore some key aspects of child development; learn how to plan a play therapy room; play therapy and nature; outdoor play therapy; explore safety issues in play therapy; working with groups; ASDs and play therapy.

Module Three: Play Therapy in Practice. Explore key play therapy techniques and approaches - including puppets, miniature figures, art therapy, crafts, water, clay, doll's house, worksheets, poetry, and bibliotherapy; connecting to the child; explore the development of emotional awareness; emotional literacy; confidentiality and other boundaries in play therapy.

Module Four: The Origins of Play Therapy. Explore the historical background to play therapy; learn about some of key theories in the development of play therapy; learn about the importance of self-awareness for the play therapist; professional practice - ethics and professional development; self-care - burnout and vicarious traumatisation.
