Counselling Skills

Practical Counselling Skills for Schools

This course introduces a range of counselling skills that may be beneficial in an education setting. It is ideal for teachers and support staff who would like to develop practical counselling skills that may be helpful in the school context.

Many education staff are now called upon to play a counselling role, supporting students who are experiencing anxiety or emotional or psychological distress.

This course is designed to give students the confidence and skills needed to support such children effectively. The course material includes a comprehensive introduction to the core counselling skills, and also includes specific guidelines on working step-by-step through a support session. The course ends by introducing additional ideas and techniques drawn from cognitive behavioural therapy that are relevant to the school context.

Study topics include: active listening; core counselling skills; structuring support sessions; beginnings and endings; unique challenges of counselling children; understanding extreme emotions; identifying time for referral; lessons from CBT.

Well-structured course, easy to follow and covering a lot of ground. I found it very useful and really enjoyed it. The tutor feedback added a lot, really valuable!

Support Assistant

I'm really glad that I completed the course, it's given me a useful new perspective and helped me to feel more confident supporting children with psychological and emotional challenges. This is an aspect of my role that has become increasingly significant in recent years.
